10 Iconic Comic Book Moments (That Are Secretly Terrible)
5. Wonder Woman Kills Maxwell Lord - Infinite Crisis
When Superman suddenly started attacking his teammates, the heroes of Earth learned he was being controlled by psychic and former Justice League manager, Maxwell Lord. Realising that Lord could destroy Superman's reputation with his abilities, Wonder Woman tracked him down and snapped his neck. When the footage of Wonder Woman murdering Lord leaked, the world turned on Diana and superheroes in general.
Even though this story arc was created to build as much tension as possible for the upcoming event, Infinite Crisis, it doesn't make any sense. First off, Wonder Woman doesn't try to absolve herself. She doesn't bother to appear on the news for two minutes to explain that Max Lord was controlling Superman for his own agenda.
Also, Wonder Woman's actions seem highly out of character since she doesn't kill humans. Worse still, she doesn't act guilty and insists her actions were justified.
Furthermore, WHY is Maxwell Lord a villain all of a sudden? He may have been depicted as an amoral businessman for years but he was far from an outright baddie. Turning a smarmy entrepreneur into a genocidal murderer seemed downright absurd and insulting to long-time fans of the character.
