10 Iconic Comic Book Moments (That Are Secretly Terrible)

3. Iron Man Goes Evil - Civil War

It's fascinating to watch superheroes being forced to make a decision that is less than noble. The film, Captain America: Civil War, captured this idea perfectly. Even though Cap and Iron Man were at odds with one another, they both had compelling arguments why they were in the right.

But that's not the case with the comic that inspired the movie. After vigilantism is criminalised in the opening act of the story, many superheroes refuse to cooperate with the world's governments. Iron Man responds by arresting his comrades and transporting them to an interdimensional prison without trial. He admits to Peter Parker that they'll never be released unless they agree to play ball.

Not only that, he allows supervillains to work for him, which results in the death of the superhero, Goliath. After watching the founding Avenger turning on his friends, it wasn't long before readers compared Shellhead to a dictator.

This character arc was so reviled, the Marvel writers attempted to absolve Iron Man of his actions by writing a story where he lost his memory and couldn't remember anything that occurred during the Civil War.
