10 Iconic Comic Book Moments (That Are Secretly Terrible)

2. The Fans Vote To Kill Jason Todd - A Death In The Family

The original Robin, Dick Grayson, is one of the most beloved superheroes of all time. Sadly, readers weren't too keen on his successor, Jason Todd, since he came across as brash, immature, and cocky.

Realising that keeping this Robin in the series could lead to losing sales, the bigwigs at DC Comics decided to put Jason's fate to a vote. The company held a telephone poll to determine whether the Boy Wonder would live or die in an upcoming story. After receiving just enough votes in favour of Jason's demise, DC Comics had the character murdered by the Joker in 1988's A Death in the Family.

Here's the problem; why did DC have to kill him off? When a character isn't popular, they simply stop appearing in comics. Jason was a child! Why does he have to die? Not only that, why did he have to be slaughtered in such a brutal manner? Did readers have to watch the Joker smash a boy's skull in over and over with a crowbar before blowing him up?

Also, the fact that the Joker escapes justice due to diplomatic immunity after becoming the Iranian ambassador is so silly, it undercuts Jason's tragic passing.
