2. Everything In Justice League: Cry For Justice + Rise Of Arsenal

DC Comics

Cry for Justice begins with the Justice League discussing the deaths of Batman and Martian Manhunter following the events of Final Crisis. Green Arrow and Green Lantern believe they need to be harsher at taking down criminals and try to push the team to pre-emptively attack supervillains instead of waiting for them to make a move. This decision leads to the Leaguers torturing supervillains for intel.

Even though this seems uncharacteristic for the world's greatest superheroes, the story gets so much worse. A criminal mastermind called Prometheus hacks off Roy Harper's arm and blows up an entire city, killing countless people, including Roy's daughter, Lian.

In the follow-up, Rise of Arsenal, Roy has become so shaken by his child's death, he starts taking drugs. The pills cause him to hallucinate so he sees Prometheus everywhere he turns. The hallucinations become so intense, he mistakes a dead cat for the body of his daughter. Despite the fact the image of Roy cradling a cat's carcass is meant to make him look desperate, it comes across as unintentionally hilarious and ridiculous.

Although readers hated how these stories ruined Roy Harper and depicted heroes as murders, they were most upset by how a child was killed off purely for shock value.
