7. Captain America Quits Being A Superhero

Invisible Woman Malice
Marvel Comics

Steve Roger was instantly smitten when he met SHIELD operative Sharon Carter, since she reminded him of his old flame during World War II, Peggy Carter. When he asked her on a date in Tales of Suspense #95, Rogers was unaware she was the daughter of his old girlfriend. (In case you were wondering, that's not the awkward part.)

On their first date, Cap proposed to Sharon, despite the fact he didn't know her name. After Sharon rejected him, Rogers was so devastated, he quit his superhero lifestyle.

Because Rogers returned to being Captain America in the following issue, you would assume there was no lasting damage to this childish decision, right?

But when Rogers gave up the mantle of Captain America, he revealed his secret identity to the world! Up until this point, it wasn't public knowledge that Cap and Steve Rogers were one and the same. Of all the things that could have made Cap compromise his identity, he did it because a girl whom he barely knew turned down his marriage proposal on the first date.

Needless to say, readers hated this story since it made Cap come across as a petulant and sulky creep.
