4. Superman: Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow?
Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? is a two-part story written by Alan Moore with the assistance of editor Julius Schwartz and drawn by Curt Swan. Although it is technically an “imaginary story”, it is widely considered to be the final story of the Silver Age Superman.
A reporter interviewed Lois Lane about the last days of Superman, who was last seen ten years prior. At that time, many of his foes had disappeared or died and Superman turned his own attention to research. While he was distracted, Bizarro returned, destroyed Metropolis, and killed himself. The Toyman and the Prankster tortured and killed Pete Ross to learn Superman’s secret identity. They exposed Clark Kent on live TV in a hail of rockets, causing Kal to gather his remaining friends and take them to the Fortress of Solitude for safety.
The Man of Steel was attacked by a merged Lex Luthor and Brainiac, along with the Kryptonite Man and an army of Metallos. Lana Lang and Jimmy Olsen were killed, as was Krypto, and Kal realized Mr. Mxyzptlk was the only missing element. He pointed the Phantom Zone Projector at the imp as he was saying his name backwards, and Mxy was ripped between dimensions. After breaking his one rule against killing, Superman elected to remove his powers and disappeared into the Arctic wilderness. As the reporter leaves, Lois smiled at her husband Jordan Elliot as their son squeezed a piece of coal into a diamond.
