Justice League The Final Night
DC Comics/Alex Ross

Kingdom Come was a four-issue “Elseworlds” miniseries created by prolific comics writer Mark Waid and co-written and painted by artist Alex Ross. Set in the near future of the DC Universe, the second generation of heroes are little better than the villains they fight. The Spectre recruited pastor Norman McCay to help him pass judgment in the upcoming superhero apocalypse.

After a disaster in Kansas that killed millions, Superman returned and reformed the Justice League. Villains and violent heroes who refused to toe the line were sent to the “re-education” Gulag. Batman warned Clark that his authoritative methods would light a powder keg. In secret, Bruce created a team of his own, and the villains did as well, led by Lex Luthor. Luthor unleashes a brainwashed Captain Marvel on the Gulag and destroyed it, starting a war with the Justice League.

Tired of the “Metahuman problem”, the United Nations authorized dropping nuclear weapons on the Gulag. Although Marvel exploded it in the air, it still killed nearly everyone there except Superman and a few other survivors. Enraged, Clark went to destroy the UN but was stopped by Norman McCay. In the epilogue, Alan Scott represented superheroes at the UN, Batman made Wayne Manor into a hospital with the villains as nurses, and Kal began to reseed the Kansas farmland. Clark and Diana also became pregnant and asked Bruce to be the child's godfather.
