In the year of our lord 1602, the Dutch East India Company was founded, William Shakespeare published the Merry Wives of Windsor, and Queen Elizabeth I was murdered by an agent of Otto von Doom, setting the course for King James to take control of the British Isles.

That last point only happens in the 1602 universe.

1602 was an eight issue limited series published in 2003. Written by the always bizarre-minded Neil Gaiman, the series takes a look at popular Marvel characters living in the Elizabethan era.

The story doesn't revolve around a simple change of setting for the marvel heroes; instead using the forced time relocation of Captain America for the sudden appearance of super powered individuals 400 years early.

This side plot is where the story falls a bit flat, but of course Neil Gaiman isn't known for the simple. He has to get weird with it.

The series, and its later sequels, focus primarily on the beginning of colonisation of North America.

It's a pretty decent book, not amazing or anything, but a Spider-man costume with neck ruffles just makes the universe so worthwhile. It's ridiculous but inherently charming.

Wesley Cunningham-Burns hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
