In Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola’s esteemed ‘Batman: Gotham by Gaslight,’ we are introduced to a version of Batman on his quest for justice set at the turning of a century, in the year 1889. In this depiction of the Dark Knight, Bruce must face Jack the Ripper who - like most fiction to feature the character - has recently stateside, to Gotham.

After the tragic death of his parents, Bruce Wayne was raised by his faithful family butler, Alfred Pennyworth, and his godfather, Jacob Packer. Growing up, Bruce left Gotham and the country to find his purpose. He eventually relocated to Vienna and became a student of Doctor Sigmund Freud, who could tell the young Wayne had more than a parental issues. Freud explained the bat filled dreams were “some symbol-laden puzzle” and soon after Bruce announced his return to Gotham.

Soon after returning he learnt of Gotham’s rapidly increasing crime rate and Bruce donned the cape and cowl, ready to begin his pursuit of justice as The Batman. During his war on crime it was revealed that infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper had come to Gotham City from London, whom the police believed Batman to be connected to. Bruce was later framed for the actions of the serial killer and was later incarcerated despite a lack of evidence. Pennyworth broke Bruce out of jail and continued their hunt for the Ripper who was actually Packer (the aforementioned godfather), and it is even revealed that Packer was infatuated with Martha Wayne - so much so that he only murdered women who resembled Bruce's mother. Creepy.
