Doug Moench’s Batman: Book of the Dead ultimately ponders the idea that the role of the Bat had existed for centuries.

In this series the ancient Egyptian gods that ruled the world 14,000 years ago were actually alien humanoids. These beings took the form of animals and the god Nekhrun took its image from the bat, becoming the Bat God. Nekhrun betrayed the dark lord Set for Isis and Osiris, the lords of light, and assisted in the project designed to aid future generations by hiding possible means of salvation in a ‘Riddle of the Sphinx,’ which cost him his life. After his death, mythology was altered and Nekhrun was written out of history.

Centuries later, the world renowned archeological family the Waynes discovered the lost cartouche of the long forgotten Bat God. After his parents died the carvings were handed down to Bruce who went go on to become The Batman. With the help of Sheila Ramsey, he managed to ultimately uncover the clues to salvation below Giza and save humanity from the impending polar shift.
