Cathy Webster is a character who - without casting too many aspersions on the writer responsible for her origin - clearly had some issues they were working through.

Cathy participates in a psychology experiment that subliminally brainwashes her to hate all men, and also gives her super-strength - two things that are, apparently, somehow totally in line with one another.

When she breaks free of said brainwashing, she decides to become a superhero called Free Spirit, presumably to get some use out of those free superpowers she somehow got her hands on.

Free Spirit ends up being a pretty interesting character - in that she becomes very close to being a female Captain America - but her origins leave her as one of the weirder superheroes that Marvel has ever put together.
