10 Insane Times Comics Revealed A Hero's Future

2. Batman - The Dark Knight Returns

It may be a no-brainer now, but there's a reason The Dark Knight Returns is placed on such a high pedestal.

When it came out in 1986, Batman was not seen as the dark and brooding character he had been previously by the general public. Yes the likes of O'Neil and Englehart and reiterated Batman's dark nature in the decade previously, but TDKR went one step further by pushing the character more in that direction.

This future for Batman is intense, turning the Caped Crusader almost into Clint Eastwood from the Dirty Harry franchise. He needs to be more brutal than ever to take back the reigns of Gotham.

It is truly one of the few comics that are placed on the same par as traditional literature, but that doesn't hold back the fact that this interpretation of Batman is one of the most insane - and iconic - of all the futures.
