After the leader of the Fantastic Four, Reed Richards, notices his arm is deteriorating, he analyses it and learns that his cells are collapsing.

Deducing that the same thing is happening to the rest of the Fantastic Four, he realises this condition will inevitably kill them. Not knowing how to reverse molecular decay, he ventures throughout the cosmos with his family to find a cure under the pretence that they are on holiday.

As his wife, Sue Storm, suspects Reed is hiding something, he still refuses to confess they are in mortal danger. Only after Sue's invisibility powers go on the fritz does Reed fess up.

Reed tries to justify his actions, saying he only kept them in the dark to protect them. Not only is the rest of the Fantastic Four terrified upon learning they are in mortal danger but they are disgusted that Reed hid their fate from them.

His daughter, Valeria, feels utterly betrayed and tells Reed she hates him before storming off. Reed did manage to reverse the team's condition, but it still took some time for them to forgive him.
