Bill Willingham's Fables comic gained mainstream recognition in 2013 with the release of Telltale's The Wolf Among Us, but comics fans have known for a while just how great the world the writer constructed actually is.

Taking the fables and folklore stories of centuries past and giving them a modern makeover, Fables brings readers to a world where myth and reality co-exist. The likes of Snow White and the Big Bad Wolf (named Bigby Wolf in the comic) are all alive in the modern day, and they all live in a place called Fabletown, where the latter works as the sheriff.

Featuring tales with a noir focus, Fables broaches all kinds of genres and manages to reappraise literature's most established heroes and villains in a worthwhile manner, providing new spins on these characters by constantly pushing them forward, rather than dwelling on the fables and tales readers will undoubtedly be familiar with.

The concept of taking old folklore tales and outfitting them with a modern makeover isn't exactly new, but the architecture of Willingham's comic is. It's all fully realised from top to bottom, and as most readers will attest, the more detailed the setting, the more immersive the story.
