10 Insultingly Dumb Superman Comic Storylines

6. Superman Paralyses A Footballer - Action Comics #4 (1939)

Superman Supergirl Kiss
DC Comics

While on a train, Superman overhears a football coach called Randall who'll be let go if his team doesn't win their upcoming game against Cordell. To ensure his team emerges victorious, Randall orders his ringers to rough up the opposing team's star player.

Superman decides to foil Randall's plan in the most idiotic way possible. He locates one of the Cordell players, Tommy Burke, and stabs him with a hypodermic needle. Our hero then impersonates Burke to stop Randall's goons from beating up Cordell's players.

To make sure the real Burke doesn't jeopardise his plan, Superman injects him with a paralytic, crippling him for several days. Despite the fact Superman is meant to be in disguise, he displays his superstrength within seconds of meeting the Cordell players, knocking one of them into a brick wall.

Although the story concludes with Superman handing Randall over to the police, why didn't he have him arrested the second he heard him talking about his scheme on the train?

What's weirder is all this happened in the fourth Superman comic ever published! It's baffling how successful Superman became considering how much of a jerk he was in the early years.
