10 Judge Dredd Comics You Must Read Before You Die

1. Origins

Judge Dredd
2000 AD

Origins is probably the most important story in the Judge Dredd back catalog, as it finally tells how the Justice Department came into being.

When a sample of living tissue is sent to Chief Judge Hershey, along with a ransom note, it is soon discovered that the DNA matches that of Judge Fargo, the first ever judge and the mastermind behind the Judge System.

With Fargo thought to have been dead for years, Dredd reveals that this is not the case, and in a series of flashbacks he tells his traveling companions just how their way of life came into being and what became of the Godfather himself.

It is an epic, sprawling tale, making Origins one of the longest Dredd stories to ever grace the pages of 2000 AD, and it is worth every second that it takes to read it.

Telling how society was on the brink of collapse and how order needed to be restored, it shows how much the people needed an iron hand to rule them. But this would put them at loggerheads with the President who, mad as a bag full of rabid badgers, is leading the country into a nuclear war.

Origins gives the reader everything they could want in the violence stakes, as well as filling in the long asked questions of how that tyrany all began.
