10 Justice League Moments That Shocked The World

4. The Justice League Died - JLA #69-74 (2002-2003)

Endgame Superman
DC Comics

After Tempest creates a time paradox so Atlantis never sank, the Justice League time-travelled to return the timestream to normal.

When the League failed to return to the present after a month had passed, the Watchtower initiated an emergency program to find new Justice League members to recruit. Naturally, the new members, led by Nightwing, ventured to the past to find out what happened to the original team.

During this story arc, it's repeatedly implied the Justice League are dead. Of course, comic books do fake-outs all the time so the reader naturally assumed the world's greatest super-team were still live and kicking. But when Nightwing discovered the skeletal remains of his teammates, he realised his friends and mentors had truly perished.

But it gets worse. Atlantis was then attacked by a witch called Gamemnae who had the ability to absorb life energy. Since she could control any living thing, a witchdoctor resurrected the League as undead zombies and encouraged them to defeat her.

(Before you ask, watching a skeletal Superman, a zombie Wonder Woman, and Flash's torso beating the crap out of a witch is exactly as awesome as it sounds.)
