10 Key Members Of The Justice Society Of America

9. The Flash (Jay Garrick)

Justice Society Of America
DC Comics

Another founding member of the Justice Society, the original Flash was Jason 'Jay' Garrick, a research scientist who first appeared in Flash Comics #1 in 1940.

Accidentally inhaling a chemical formula, ex-college athlete Garrick gained the powers of superspeed, limited interdimensional travel, and decreased ageing.

Donning a colourful costume like that of his peers and an iconic helmet resembling the God Mercury, Garrick joined the original Justice Society and was a key player in many of its early adventures.

When the JSA returned for the Modern Age, the Golden Age Flash joined their ranks to inspire a new generation of superheroes. A family man and an optimist, it was always Jay Garrick who kept the team together and at the top of their game.

Like the Alan Scott version of Green Lantern, Jay Garrick's Flash serves to create a legacy within the pages of DC Comics and teach other heroes how to be the best. During crossover events, Jay Garrick would often impart knowledge and advice onto other Flashes, including Barry Allen and Wally West.

This version of the Scarlett Speedster also plays a major role in The Flash TV show - particularly in Season Two - as well as being referenced in Smallville and Stargirl.
