Lex Luthor had devised a scheme to cause a number of Earthquakes that would create a new West Coast of the United States for him to build real estate on and, while Luthor had been stopped, aftershocks were still taking place. One of them knocked Lois Lane's car into a crevice, which quickly filled with debris and suffocated her. Devastated, a crying Superman flew around the Earth several times at super-speed, which resulted in time turning backwards to when Lois was still alive. He then prevented her accident from taking place and saved her life. No flux capacitor required.
