10 Manga With Amazing Artwork

4. Berserk

Sun-Ken Rock
Studio GEMBA

Guts and Griffiths’ grisly adventures have been capturing the imaginations of readers everywhere since publication first kicked off in 1989. An unbelievably grim and violent saga, Berserk takes place in an especially cruel medieval fantasy world torn apart by war and plague among other things.

Writer and illustrator Kentaro Miura illustrates his twisted vision with remarkable detail and style. The aesthetic appeal of his crisp, well shaded work accentuates the stomach churning violence of his black hearted tales. Better still is the impressive grotesquerie of the various monsters the characters butt heads with. Scary and ridiculous in their ferocity, Berserk has provided some of the greatest creature features in the history of the fantasy genre.

For long suffering protagonist Guts, joining Griffith and his deadly Band of the Hawk is only the beginning. What follows are some of the most ultra violent, blood and guts stuffed battles a reader can find. Thanks to Miura’s masterful artistry, every last ounce of carnage is fully realised in a world so bleak and brutal that George R.R. Martin would cringe.
