To be a superhero means to save lives, but sometimes, not everyone can be saved. Sometimes, superheroes mess up and the consequences are severe.

This was the case for Robbie Baldwin, AKA Speedball. During the events of Civil War, Speedball was a part of a team called the New Warriors, who attempted to arrest a group of supervillains for their reality TV show. One of the villains, Nitro, created an explosion that killed 612 civilians and the rest of the New Warriors.

As the only survivor, Speedball felt tremendous guilt and anxiety over the incident. Overcome with grief, Baldwin developed a suit of armour with 612 spikes that cut into his flesh. Calling himself Penance, Baldwin engaged in self-harm and believed it was the only way to activate his powers.

Through reuniting with the New Warriors, Baldwin learned to forgive himself. He eventually returned to his Speedball identity, vowing to train a new generation of young heroes.
