10 Marvel Superheroes With Tortured Pasts

No matter how many times they re-do the origin story of the Fantastic Four, one thing always remains the same. Ben Grimm does not want to go into space but in the end, whether it's down to Reed guilting him into it or because he has a soft spot for Sue, he always climbs into the pilot seat.

This leads to their exposure to cosmic rays and when they finally crash land back on Earth, they find that they all have super-powers. But where Reed, Sue, and Johnny are still human, poor Ben is now nothing more than a monster. Sure, he's a very strong monster, but his appearance changes so radically that people actually run screaming from him when they see him in the flesh (rock?).

And if this isn't bad enough, it seems that Marvel wasn't done sticking the boot to the giant orange one.

In Fantastic Four V5, issue #7, it is revealed with the death of Uatu the Watcher that he could've been turned back to his natural state years ago if it hadn't been for a monumental balls-up by his best friend, Johnny Storm.
