10 Messed Up Superman Storylines You Won't Believe Exist
6. Kingdom Come
Kingdom Come is a must-read for anyone who has a hankering for a good Elseworlds comic, as it covers a surprisingly believable scenario wherein Superman disappeared for many years, and the superhero community went on without him, albeit while disillusioned due to his departure.
It's a darker universe for each of our heroes. Wonder Woman has been exiled by the Amazonians, Batman has had his spine irreparably broken, and Shazam is being forcibly mind-controlled by Lex Luthor into being his subservient sidekick.
Worse of all, the concept of being a superhero has been commercialised, with restaurant chains using famous superhero costumes for their servers, and with many 'hero' vigilantes being more interested in beating someone down than any kind of justice.
The series has a mercifully light and hopeful ending, but it's one that comes at the cost of Shazam's life and thousands more, which leaves it kind of mixed in tone.
