When you look at older Superman comics, it's hard to figure out what storylines are messed up, because pretty much every issue has one moment of profound weirdness.

This said, the eleventh ever Superman annual - titled 'For The Man WHo Has Everything', which was written by Alan Moore - still manages to be head and shoulders above the rest, because it's wall to wall wildness.

The story starts with Superman going about his ordinary life on Krypton, which immediately shows something is off, because the issue takes place in the main DC universe, where the planet is famously destroyed. We quickly learn that Superman is hallucinating this due to a bioweapon named the Black Mercy that has attached itself to him, and that Wonder Woman and Batman are furiously trying to rescue him from its clutches.

Superman frees himself, but the weapon then attaches to Batman, who dreams a life where his parents didn't die. Both return to the real world, but both are left undeniably scarred by memories of alternate lives that seem completely real to them.

I like my comics like I like my coffee - in huge, unquestionably unhealthy doses.
