Black Panther has the distinction of blazing more than one trail. As the first black superhero, he has cleared the way for characters like Falcon, Luke Cage and countless others. T’Challa even managed to beat DC’s Black Lightning to the punch by being the first black superhero with his own title comic. Surprisingly, Panther had no solo comic of his own until ten years after his initial debut.

Which is why its no surprise that people have been trying to get a Black Panther feature film made for close to twenty-five years. But who would play the stoic and calculating King T'Challa when all was said and done? Well in 1992, Wesley Snipes and his agents sat down and considered making the film a reality, with Snipes in the title role.

Even though three separate Black Panther scripts were penned, the issue came down to finding a director suitable for the film. According to Snipes, that very search is what halted the project from moving any further. Undeterred, Wesley went on to star as the Marvel super hero Blade in the 1997 film of the same name. The film was a major success, and kickstarted a franchise that would influence the genre massively in the following years.
