Sometimes being a hero is all about helping those do a job they cannot do themselves. Something similar happened after Shadowland, a story arc that saw Daredevil possessed by the Hand, left Hell’s Kitchen without a hero. Matt Murdock, still shaken from his brush with demonic possession, decides to take a leave of absence from his domain in Hell’s Kitchen, entrusting it in the hands of Black Panther.

Panther agrees to guard Daredevil’s stomping grounds, just as long as he gets to do it his way. It is revealed that Black Panther’s act of generosity wasn’t completely altruistic. He had been longing to find his true identity, one that wasn’t centred around his lineage, or defined by his reign as king. So when Murdock proposes that T’Challa protect Hell’s Kitchen while he’s gone, the king uses it as an opportunity to see what he is truly made of. He fights crime his way, with explosive consequences.

After butting heads with several New York-based heroes, Panther is ultimately able to stop the evil Vlad The Impaler, and return Hell’s Kitchen to a relative state of normalcy. He gives the reigns back to Daredevil and returns to Wakanda a new man.
