10 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Captain America

1. Captain America Was Created A Whole Year BEFORE The US Entered WWII

Marvel Comics

Many people are under the impression that Captain America was created solely as wartime propaganda. But Cap's legacy is so much more important than that.

Despite what many people believe, the star-spangled superhero debuted nearly a year before the United States entered World War II. Even though the war had been ongoing for nearly two years, the US had long adopted a policy of isolationism and non-intervention to avoid foreign conflicts. The United States was still healing from the Great Depression, and the last thing the country needed was to get involved in another war.

That's why it was such a bold decision for Jack Kirby and Joe Simon to create a comic that was so vocally anti-Nazi and for US involvement in Europe. Being Jewish themselves, Kirby and Simon couldn't sit idly by and watch Nazis spread anti-Semitism and hate throughout the world. To them, the comic wasn't mere entertainment or a way to make a quick buck - it was their statement to the world that the US couldn't ignore the threat of fascism any longer.

And considering how successful it was and how the United States entered the war several months later, following the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbour, it was clear American citizens stood by Captain America's principals to always fight the good fight and stand against tyranny.
