10 Mistakes Non-Comic Book Fans Make About Comic Books

3. Thinking Comics Are Only For Kids

Think comic books are just for kids? Think again (and yes, that is Wolverine making paper chains). Comic books have long evolved from the solely child-friendly stories of old and, these days, often carry with them very adult themes and content. Extreme violence, gore, sex and swearing can regularly be found in comics - even in the big companies. The first example that springs to mind is Preacher. Preacher ran from 1995-2000 under DC's Vertigo imprint, so we're talking about nearly 20 years passing since it started, and it focused on a character called Jesse Custer. Custer possessed the "Word of God" - a power which enabled him to make people do whatever he said. In one stand-out instance, he commanded Sheriff Root, the county sheriff, to "go f**k himself", which the sheriff did without question. And, to be honest, that's a pretty tame example in comparison to what some comics have inside their pages. Basically, comic books are now not just for kids at all.
