10 Mistakes Non-Comic Book Fans Make About Comic Books

4. Thinking Green Lantern/Flash Etc Is One Person

There are a number of superheroes in comic books whose name is a title given to a number of characters who wield the same power, rather than a unique name given to a particular person, and this can cause confusion amongst those not familiar with the material. Take Green Lantern for instance. If you aren't familiar with the comics, you probably think Green Lantern is one person - it's not. It is a name given to any character recruited to the Green Lantern Corps - an intergalactic organisation who recruit beings from all over the galaxy to act as guardians of their sector. As a result, there are thousands of Green Lanterns, all wielding a powerful Green Lantern ring, and they can come in all kinds of shapes and sizes - several humans of both genders being amongst them, including Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, John Stewart and Jennifer-Lynn Hayden. Flash is another example. The name has been given to several super-speed characters who are all connected to what is known as the Speed Force - an extra-dimensional energy force - including Barry Allen, Wally West, Jay Garrick and Bart Allen. We could go on, but you get the point.
