10 Moments Comic Book Characters Realised THEY Were The Villain
4. Hal Jordan - Green Lantern #64 (1995)
The Green Lantern of Earth, Hal Jordan, was absolutely devastated when he witnessed his home city being destroyed by the alien Mongul. He was left so vulnerable, a fear-inducing parasite called Parallax was able to weave into his mind and turn him into a force of evil. Hal then stole the energy of the Central Power Battery to give himself godlike abilities. He became obsessed with reshaping reality in his own image, even if it meant restarting the universe.
When the Justice League told him he was blinded by grief, he assumed they just weren't able to see the big picture. When Hal's former teammates realised they couldn't beat him, the new Lantern, Kyle Rayner, tried to reason with him. He pointed out to Hal that, despite his best intentions, he was no longer acting like a hero. He promised Hal that if he continued to go down this path, he would never be seen as anything except as a villain.
Recognising Kyle was right, Hal abandoned his crusade and flew off. The final panel of this story shows Hal cradling himself on an alien world, haunted by what he has become.
