10 More Comic Book Teams That Need Their Own Movie
3. Annihilators
Talk about overkill. But sometimes, overkill is the answer.
From 2004 to 2011, the cosmic side of Marvel's universe got a new lease of life. Largely overseen by writers Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning, the stories that made up this overarching epic exploration of the furthest corners of the universe and its inhabitants displayed the visual imagination and scale only comic books are know for. Old favourites like the Silver Surfer and Galactus played meaty roles, and this period of time also introduced us to the version of the Guardians of the Galaxy seen on screen.
During this time, the galaxy is devastated by a succession of events: the Annihilation Wave which was lead by Annihilus, and a second one lead by Ultron; the War of Kings and Realm of Kings, and the Thanos Imperative.
TIn this latter story, the Mad Titan was enlisted to help the GotG and other space-based heroes to defend the universe from the undying beings of the Cancerverse. Only one of the greatest bringers of death could make a true difference. The threat was defeated, but the story ended with Thanos, Star-Lord, and Nova (Richard Rider) left stranded in the Cancerverse, seemingly dying in the process. With the leader of the GotG gone as well as the last member of the Nova Corps, the galaxy needed a new powerhouse team to stand on guard. The Annihilators were born.
The team is easily one of the most powerful to have appeared in comics, initially consisting of the Silver Surfer, Beta Rey Bill, Gladiator, Ronan the Accuser, and Quasar, all brought together by Cosmo, head of Knowhere and telepathic dog. Because why not?
Given its members ridiculous power levels, they're going to need sufficiently big enough threats to warrant their formation. And with the MCU opening up more and more to the wider reaches of space, those threats are out there.
