Inter-company crossovers often give readers a chance to see their favourite characters come together and interact in a variety of ways. These mega-events rarely, if ever, have any impact on the ongoing storylines of said characters and serve as wish fulfilment for fans.

However, as hollow as some of these crossovers can, it does not mean that they are not entertaining. One example of this is the JLA/Avengers crossover that was released in 2003. In addition to being the rare crossover with any long-lasting impact, it provided a nice contrast between the two universes as well as how their respective heroes perceive their counterparts and the worlds they live in.

Due to the machinations of the Grandmaster and Krona, the heroes fight each other for the survival of their homeworlds and one of these pairings involves Superman and Thor. The Asgardian and Kryptonian are more or less evenly matched and there is no clear winner until Superman somehow stops Mjolnir dead in its tracks and swiftly knock out Thor.

It was later stated that Thor underestimated his opponent and that a future fight may not be as decisive in the Man of Steel's favour.
