10 Most Brutal Fights In Superman Comics

5. Muhammad Ali

Superman vs Thor
DC Comics

The late, great Muhammad Ali was one of boxing's most dynamic and talented fighters and helped elevate the sport to new heights during his tenure in the game. So, it only made sense that such a towering figure would be depicted in the larger-than-life world of DC and pitted against the Man of Steel himself.

The one-shot story sees the hero pitted against the heavyweight champion in a boxing match due to the machinations of the extraterrestrial Scrubb, a species that holds intergalactic tournaments where the loser has their homeworld destroyed. The reason behind the boxing match is that only one individual per planet can take part in the contest, so the heroes decide to choose Earth's champion on their own terms.

Superman trains for the fight due to his lack of boxing expertise and it takes place under a red sun to give Ali a chance in the match. Despite his training and actually landing decent hits, the Man of Tomorrow is soundly humbled in the match and Ali is chosen as Earth's fighter. Despite this, the heroes ultimately work together and save the planet from destruction anyway.
