The Batman Who Laughs is sort of the hot new trend in having awful things happen in comics - likely because after the Joker got his face cut clean off and then put his skinned face near a bunch of bugs, there was little he could do to get more messed up.

But since the Batman Who Laughs lived in a different universe altogether, there's literally no limit to how messed up they can have his backstory be, which is something that writers and artists alike seem to have taken great joy in.

Take, for example, a nightmarish tidbit that is gently revealed throughout the laughing villain's time in comics; the fact that he has twisted many members of his Batfamily over to his side. The most visually traumatic of these is that of poor Damian, Batman's youngest Robin, who we see in the Dark Knight: Batman Who Laughs series having been subjected to gruesome body modifications that leave him with wires embedded in his cheek to give him a permanent grin.

The most emotionally traumatic, however, has to be the reveal that he also recruited Alfred, by trapping him in a secluded area of the Batcave and torturing him for a year until he finally broke.

I like my comics like I like my coffee - in huge, unquestionably unhealthy doses.
