10 Most Disturbing Moments In Batman Comics

3. The Mad Hatter Loses It - Batman: The Dark Knight (Vol. 3) #16-18

Now, it'd be a downright lie to say that before 2014, the Mad Hatter had never seemed scary. But he was generally scary in the sense that he was so disconnected from reality that he didn't seem to know he was doing terrible, terrible things - as in his mind, every woman he kidnapped to become his new 'Alice' was a women he had freed.

Then the Dark Knight comic series decided to use Jervis Tetch, and everything suddenly got little bit darker. In this universe, Tetch was subjected to experimental trials on his brain to try and make him grow taller (it's a long story), which would succeed, but also have the somewhat unfortunate side effect of making him lose his mind.

And thus, where we expected the usual zany Mad Hatter, we instead got a villain who beat in the head of his childhood love interest with a scalding hot iron, which is a pretty drastic change.
