10 Most Embarrassing Comic Book Deaths

5. Ch’p (Green Lantern Mosaic #2)

Villain Bites
DC

The Green Lantern Corps does not discriminate when it comes to recruiting its members. Species from all across the galaxy are represented, and are chosen solely based on their fearlessness. Ch’p, an extraterrestrial resembling an anthropomorphic chipmunk, becomes one the Green Lanterns after he shows great courage in rebelling against an invasion of his home world.

It would be easy to classify Ch’p as a novelty character, but his heroism and sense of humor has elevated him to a likeable and competent Green Lantern, which is why his death is such a slap in the face. Looking back, it’s clear that the writers at DC had it out for this little guy. Despite his cute outwardly appearance, they made Ch’p go through some dark stuff. For instance, Ch’p’s one true love shacked up with his best friend while he was out saving the galaxy, which made him fall into a deep depression. It was so bad that Ch’p was going to kill himself until some of the other Lanterns showed up to talk him out of it.

The fact he was able to overcome his depression to uphold justice throughout the universe is clearly a win, but someone really hated Ch’p. One day, Ch’p is minding his own business, crossing the road while humming a jaunty tune when a yellow truck smears him all over the pavement. To add insult to injury, the comic in which his death occurs has the word “roadkill” splashed all over the front cover. Have some tact DC, sheesh.
