6. Captain America: Reborn
So Steve Rogers was shot and killed in the events following Civil War. And Ed Brubaker did a hell of a job taking Bucky and making him a new and unique Cap. (Unlike Dick Grayson becoming Batman, who we just pretended was Bruce Wayne because they looked and behaved exactly the same.) The Death of Captain America was top to bottom solid story telling. As far as dealing with the aftermath of a heroes death, this is about as good as it gets. (Except for Mullet Superman of course...) And then the aftermath story ran its course and people started getting antsy for Steve Rogers to come back. And that's only natural. When you kill an important character who people love, he/she can't stay dead forever. If Superman ever only killed one thing in his life, surely 'twas death itself. Heroes cannot die forever, especially the important ones. The only reason these stories exist is to sell books and make money. Plain and simple. When it came time for the original Cap to return, and we knew that the Skrull possibility was eliminated, what was left to explain his comeback? That the gun used to "kill" him actually froze him in time and space!
Shocking!! Yawn. Long story short, we go through Rogers' history during random events in time and in the end he comes back and is Captain America again. In the wise words of Peter Griffin, "There, I just saved you two long boobless hours."
