2. The Fight Against The Black Lantern Zombies

The best Flash Comics
DC Comics

Blackest Night was a refreshing, yet brutal, update to the Green Lantern mythos and gave us one of the biggest friends-turning-into-foes storylines in comic book history. The premise focused on a mysterious presence that is awakened after two Green Lanterns interact with the Black Central Power Battery.

Then, an ominous group of asteroids appear, which release a massive number of Black Lantern rings into the universe. The Guardians on Oa see this, but before they can act, they are attacked by the evil Scar.

The rings arrive on Oa and flood the crypts. Their power reanimates the deceased Lanterns as blood thirsty zombies, powered of course by the Black Rings. Inevitably the fight reaches earth where the rings start reviving dead superheroes, as the army of zombie Lanterns continues to expand.

Eventually the League and pretty much every other superhero must unite to stand a chance. While the universal level stakes were nothing uncommon, the sight of these heroes having to battle the demonised versions of the friends whose losses they once mourned was equal parts jarring and heartbreaking.

After battling Galactus and pinning Hulk Hogan in the main event of Wrestlemania, I've taken a break from living in fantasy worlds, to focus on writing about them. I'm a comic book geek, a wrestling mark, a break dancer, and a scientist. One of those things may not be true.
