10 Most Iconic Superhero Symbols

9. Green Lantern

Superman Clark Kent Symbol
DC Comics

When your symbol is going to be shared amongst an entire organization of space cops who all have to be immediately recognizable in order to receive the respect and leeway they need to do their jobs effectively, it pays to make that symbol as eye catching and recognizable as possible.

The original Golden Age Green Lantern symbol was okay, in that it was LITERALLY a picture of a lantern on a costume, but it tended to look awkward and had a bit too much detail to it to be comfortable drawing well multiple times an issue. Meanwhile the more minimalist approach that the Silver Age outfit took is not only much more eye catching and pleasing to look at, but is also much easier for an artist to work with.

It's honestly shocking just how little about the Green Lantern outfit has changed over the decades. Sure, the pattern and color balance between green and black may change, but the core of the outfit always remained the same: green primary across most of the suit, black on the outline to complement the green without overwhelming it, and lastly that iconic symbol in the center.
