10 Most Interesting Marvel Superhero Teams You've Never Heard Of

1. Nextwave

Midnight Sons
Marvel Comics

According to its official theme tune, Nextwave is like Shakespeare, but with lots more punching.

The series followed a team of superheroes consisting of former Avenger Photon, monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone, explosive mutant Tabitha Smith, booze-powered android Machine Man and a new character called The Captain.

The team was assembled by Dirk Anger, Director of H.A.T.E. (a very obvious parody of Nick Fury and SHIELD) to fight Unusual Weapons of Mass Destruction. However, when the team discovered that HATE was funded by the same company that made the weapons they were fighting, they went on the run.

Nextwave was created by Warren Ellis as a parody of superhero comics. The series was told in a series of two issue story arcs that saw the team fight an increasingly bizarre series of enemies, like broccoli men and off-brand versions of the Avengers including Giant-Sam and Charlie America.

The entire series was one long amazing kaleidoscope of violence. The undisputed highlight was the second to last issue, which consisted almost enitirely of two-page spreads of the team running down a corridor and fighting Elvis MODOKs, Snakes on Planes, Laser Brontosauruses and whatever else you care to imagine.

It was the greatest comic book ever written and the world is a poorer place without it.
