10 Most Messed Up Batman Moments

7. Joe Chill In Hell

zombie Batman
DC Comics

This one is just as dark as the horrors the Joker subjects Commissioner Gordon to in Killing Joke, however this time, it’s Batman himself doing the depravity. In Batman #673, after being shot and going into cardiac-arrest, Batman relives a series of memories, some hallucinatory, some real, with the lines being blurred between the two. Need it be said, Grant Morrison was the writer for this.

During his hallucinations, Batman ‘relives’ a time during which he has locked his parents killer, Joe Chill, in his penthouse apartment, visiting him every night and terrifying him. After a month, Batman visits Chill and leaves him with the gun Chill used to kill Martha and Thomas Wayne.

The terrified and, presumably, remorseful Chill is implied to have taken his life. Batman then moves on to other hallucinations. Whether this is intended to be taken as something that actually occurred is unclear. Morrison appears to have left it intentionally ambiguous. Nevertheless, psychologically bullying someone into suicide is pretty messed up.
