You can put the pieces together yourself of exactly what hides within them – although those 'pieces' may be just as awful in a very literal sense. Given this plot is used to explain why an alternate universe Batman has turned evil, it makes sense – but it’s still an incredibly savage reveal, dark universe or not.

In essence, this is a useful reminder that sometimes not revealing details is just as capable of creating a messed up moment as the most bloodthirsty gore fest. It may not have the same immediate sense of thrill as a classic bloodbath, but in terms of long-lasting horror, it’s definitely on the right track.
