One of DC's last major crossover events before the New 52, Final Crisis chronicled the collision between the standard DC Universe and the Fourth World, as well as Darkseid's plans to use the Anti-Life Equation to warp all of creation and bend it to his will.

In addition to his corrupting presence, the New God uses the Equation to subjugate the Earth and in turn transform it into an apocalyptic wasteland. Escaping captivity, the Dark Knight makes his way to Darkseid's stronghold and confronts the Dark Lord.

Bruce fires a Radion-powered gun (Radion is the only substance that can harm a New God) at Darkseid and the bullet hits him in the shoulder, weakening him. This infuriates the villain as he fires the Omega Sanction at Batman and seemingly kills him (in reality Darkseid sent Batman back in time).

While Batman did not land the final blow, his abandonment of his two rules set the stage for Darkseid's ultimate defeat and salvation of reality.
