It's impossible to talk about the DC universe as a cosmic entity without mentioning the New Gods, Jack Kirby's most important contributions to DC Comics.

Kirby is famed for creating the likes of the Fantastic Four and Thor, among others, but the Fourth World is arguably his finest creation. It was just so ambitious, and whether fans were reading Mister Miracle or the Forever People, they knew they were in for something truly special.

DC's readers should be familiar with the Fourth World by now, but if they're not, here's a primer. The New Gods emerged out of the ashes of the Old Gods (a callback to Kirby's time at Marvel), and were located on two warring planets: New Genesis, that stood for all that was good; and Apocalypse, that stood for all that was not. The former was led by High-Father. The latter was ruled by Darkseid. The two rulers exchange their sons to broker a peace, and that's only scratching the surface of Kirby's story.

It's difficult to single out any one New God as being the most powerful. Darkseid is the first to spring to mind - especially once he has the Anti-Life equation - but then there's also the likes of Orion, Infinity Man and even Metron, who possesses near unlimited knowledge.

All could lay claim to being one of the most powerful entities in the cosmos, as all New Gods are already immortal, invulnerable and possess their own unique powers and technology.
