Crisis on Infinite Earths is one of the most important comics in DC history, as it birthed the definitive version of the DC universe. Central to the story was the Anti-Monitor, an evil version of the aforementioned Monitors designed to watch over the multiverse who heralded from the anti-matter universe.

Instead of safeguarding DC's different realities, the Anti-Monitor worked to destroy them. One by one, the various 'Earths' of the multiverse were destroyed, taken apart by a destructive force unlike anything DC's heroes had ever really seen. The second Flash, Barry Allen, sacrificed himself in a bid to stop one of the Anti-Monitor's cannons. The original Supergirl was also killed - all in the name of streamlining DC's then convoluted selection of alternate realities.

After the Spectre is able to stop the Anti-Monitor, the universe begins anew. It's the ultimate battle of good vs evil, and it's ended when the Earth Two Superman (backed up by the likes of Darkseid, Superboy Prime and Doctor Light) punches the Anti-Monitor into a nearby star.

Once the dust had settled, the evil Monitor had destroyed thousands of realities and left DC without some of their most iconic figures. Not many can top that.
