Silver Surfer was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in perhaps the best example of the 'Marvel Method', whereby an artist would lay out an entire comic with Lee's guidance and it would be up to him to fill in the dialogue from the panels given. One day, in a script for the Fantastic Four, Kirby had included what Lee later referred to as "some nut with a surfboard", and - low and behold - the Silver Surfer was born.

The Surfer became one of Lee's favourite ever characters, one who has starred in some truly brilliant stories over the years, and though you never quite know what you're going to get with a Silver Surfer book, you can guarantee the hero will be up to something truly powerful.

Introduced first as Galactus' Herald (a job title thrust upon the character in order to save his planet from getting eaten by the Devourer of Worlds), the Surfer earned his freedom and travelled the cosmos helping those in need. Sometimes that 'help' meant fighting a given enemy, and with the Power Cosmic at his side, there's scarcely an enemy out there who could give him trouble.
