10 Most Powerful Sorcerers In DC Comics

6. Sargon The Sorcerer

Doctor Fate DC Comics
DC Comics

A Golden Age hero first appearing in 1941, John Sargent fought crime and battled supernatural villainy as the mystical 'Sargon the Sorcerer'. Armed with the Ruby of Life, a powerful artefact allowing him to control anything he touched, Sargon used his powers of illusion and magical weapons to protect the US, all while under the guise of a simple stage magician.

However, by the Silver Age, the Sorcerer had returned in a more villainous role. Battling the Flash, he was revealed to be possessed by the malevolent Ruby. With help from the Justice League, he was freed from the Ruby's control and given an honorary membership with the team.

Sargon would go on to provide magical support to the heroes of the DC Universe. He was finally killed alongside Zatara and other mystics as they sacrificed themselves to stop a Great Evil Beast from consuming reality. His successor and grandson, David Sargent, was on the scene to take on the mantle when magic became unbalanced after the Spectre went rogue and killed a host of supernatural characters.

Ready to champion magic once more, Sargent became a powerful new Sargon the Sorcerer but departed from his grandfather's stage magician persona.

During the New 52's Constantine run, Sargon's demonic soul became an enemy for John Constantine, as did Sargent's daughter - now taking on the mantle of 'Sargon the Sorceress'.

Leaving an impressive legacy throughout DC Comics, Sargon the Sorcerer's longevity is clearly a testament to his power.
