10 Most Quintessential 'Superman Moments' In Comic Book History
9. My Mom Made It For Me Superman For All Season #1
Superman For All Seasons, created by renowned writer/artist duo of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, is an ode to the simpler times of the character's origin. It blends humor and drama, old-timey tenderness with modern-day storytelling sensibilities. It pays tribute to the silliness of Silver Age comics without ever tipping into full-blown camp. Ultimately, it's a story about what makes Superman special: his heart. In the series debut issue, we witness Clark Kent grow from a boy to a man. In the issues closing pages, Superman rescues a small child from falling off a rooftop. The incredulous little kid says, Wow! Cool costume! And in a goofy, dorky, crowning-moment-of-heartwarming kind of way, Supes just responds: Thanks, my mom made it for me! Some might roll their eyes at the silliness of this line, forgetting the simple beauty of its presentation. We aren't supposed to take this moment seriously, though; we're meant to chuckle at it, just like the comic book is chuckling at itself. And that's part of the beauty of Superman. He can be a serious character, sure, but he also knows how to poke fun at himself.
