10 Most Quintessential 'Superman Moments' In Comic Book History

8. €œWhat Do You Think?€ €” Superman #424

Originally conceived as €œthe last Superman story ever,€ Alan Moore and Curt Swan€™s 'Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?' is now remembered as one of the greatest Superman tales ever published. The story is told in medias res by Lois Lane, who recounts Superman€™s final battle with his greatest enemies. We are led to believe that Superman had perished, and that Lois went on to marry an ordinary man named Jordan Elliot. ...Until we see their infant son use his bare hands to crush a lump of coal into diamond. Whether or not Jordan Elliot is really Superman is never explicitly answered, however, in a wonderfully meta moment in the comic€™s final panel, Elliot gives the reader the now-famous €˜Superman wink€™ and asks: €œWhat do you think?€ It€™s a decidedly optimistic little epilogue to story that is actually very dark. Ultimately, it's this sense of optimism that helps set Supes apart from so many other characters. The greatest thing about this final panel is that it contains more than just a wink; it contains the promise that in spite of all the darkness, all the death, and all the sadness, that everything will be okay in the end.
