3. A Plan To Make Beards Cool Almost Outs Superman

Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen is a treasure trove for ludicrous Silver Age stories, with the series figuring into a great deal of the Man Of Steel's douchiest moments. You can't really blame Kal-El for having enough of Jimmy's sh*t, however, especially given the time he got involved with one of the most ridiculous superhero plots ever. The eight-page back-up story in Jimmy Olsen #23 opens with the Daily Planet's cub reporter attempting to infiltrate the secretive BEARD BAND, before his own beard is exposed as a fraud and he's thrown out. And it manages to continue making less sense after that point, if you can believe it. Jimmy gets given a beard tonic and joins the group, who want to bring beards into fashion, insisting the rest of the Daily Planet follow suit. Clark, being resistant to chemicals, worries his secret identity will be outed when he fails to grow a beard. The Man Of Steel was almost outed, but not on purpose, and their plan to make beards cool relied on the perennially un-cool Jimmy Olsen...
